Work Life Balance

April 8, 2019

Maintaining a work life balance in this 'day and age' with the complexities of work place responsiblities, constant organisational changes and uncertainities, coupled with a culture of technological overdrive, is in itself a challenging environment to navigate at the best of times.  Mix to this scenario some other competing factors such as relationship, health issues, financial and family pressures, and it is not hard to see how the unhealthy new norm that people are unknowingly creating has quickly lead to creating a tipping point of 'all work/no play' and as a consequence unbalanced wellbeing and suffering.

Yes I understand that most people want it all, they want to be the best they can be, they feel deeply concerned for their responsibilities.  However in my opionion this 'overdrive' culture or new unhealthy norm/way of being, is becoming more and more insurmountable for people to sustain.  It might be doable in the short term, but often not the case long-term.

Managing an even balance of total wellbeing in and out of the workplace is harder now than ever before.  As a counsellor in workplaces, and in my private practice It is common to witness the most hardworking, determined employees pushing themselves to their limit, time and time again. And yes they are impressive to watch at first as they push through their daily tasks to attempt to get all the work done, but after a while it becomes apparent that tempers shorten, emotions rise, energy and focus of attention faulters, and relationships and health suffer.

There is a lot that can be done to prevent the suffering people are creating for themselves

6 basic pointers for a more balanced wellbeing:

1. Norish your body and stay hydrated

2. Goal set/action plan and prioritise tasks everyday

3. Take a mind break (put your brain on charge during the day)

4. Practice workplace engagement (flow) to hone in at the right level  of challenge and skills so you get into the zone

5. Honour and spend quality time everyday with social relationships and family.

6. Check in with our work-place counsellor
